Hello . . .

After getting frustrated with the search function, I'm figuring it would be quicker to just ask with a new  post . . .

How much 3M 101 will I need to properly bed my new White Oak Chine caps?  10oz. caulk-gun tubes.  I cannot get it locally so will be ordering.

Thanks,Tom

Where did you find 3M 101? I heard it was out of production. I used Boat Life and got it from Jamestown Distributing. If you sign up for their mailings they let you know when they have free freight. On my boat I only used part of a tube for everything that I bedded. I put in many extra screws around the bottom to pull it tight. I only put it on the screws to avoid the intrusion of water around the screws. Since the Chine Cap is a removable piece I didn't use any between the hull and the chine cap. The hull should already be sealed, if it isn't already sealed you will have leaks. I used 5200 between the floor and the frame members and the plywood sides.

I was up by Leavenworth, WA last week and lots of BMW adventure riders were present. No Triumphs were viewed, a KTM or two. I assume there was an event of some sort being held. Have you been doing any riding?

Hey Rick . . .

I hadn't actually purchased any 101, but I just went and looked and seems as if you are right . . . 'discontinued'.  I'll have to check out the Boat Life.  I'm going to bed the chine cap in it just because it will help to hold in place against constant hits and take some stress off the screws.  Wanted 101 so that it was more easily removable in the future.

Been riding quite a bit.  Just tore down the ole Tiger this evening (beating the heat in the basement) for some routine maintenance . . . need to make a trip to Portland Wednesday for some parts/gaskets.  Heading out on a three-day ride on Friday.

Tom, Boat Life is quite easily removable, I just pealed some off today that had squeezed out. There used to be a boat builder, perhaps Keith Steele that placed a neoprene "gasket" between the chine cap and plywood for exactly that reason. I used something like that as a seal between the top and bottom of my old Alaskan camper to keep out drafts. Maybe a 16th of an inch or so. You might send AJ DeRosa a query to see what he knows. Maybe Randy Dersham has an idea or two.

I like sikaflex 291. More adhesion than 101, but less than 4200/5200. Ultimatly flexible. Very tenacious stuff but easily cut and removed with a razor or wire. Its good stuff everywhere on the boat but especially good for chine caps. They make it in a nice mahogany color and its less than $10 a tube

just rebedded mine and two tubes is more than enough but 1 is too little...the key is to not tighten your screws in too much and therefore starving the joint...butter up both surfaces with a thin coat and tighten until light ooze...I use lifecaulk ,mahogany shade.
