Colorado River Carnage

Hi all,


I've been contemplating a build now for a  few weeks.  While chatting with a friend from Colorado, I found this boat for sale.  It was a really great deal at $1000.  Unfortunately the owner decided to take it for one last trip down the Colorado at high water and had a mishap.  

 

Here is the resulting damage.

Is this salvageable? I do have a few more pics of the boat.  He has reduced the price considerably.  I know I could use the anchor, oars, seat, trailer, ect on a new boat build, but is it possible to recover a boat from such a crash?

At this point the price needs to be free, or he should only be selling the trailer, oars, etc as parts.

 

Yes it is salvageable.  Look up Dutch's photos of his salvage after a bad river mishap.  The amount of work will be almost equal to building a new boat.  So savings of time is not a consideration. There will be some savings in materials.

Thanks for the info!  Dutch's post was great.  The salvaged boat and all the gear will be had for $20.  I think that's well worth it considering the savings in materials.  It will also give me a rough "guide" to go off of for the rebuild.

If $20.00 is not a typo and You have room in Your work area then I,d say You made a great deal;too bad it was crashed so badly,but there is 20$ worth of hardware in two feet of boat. good luck building new boat or salvaging that one.

The owner is interested in trading a 12 pack for everything.  So yeah, it's a great deal.  I'll probably end up paying a buddy $50 to pick it up but that's super worth it.  It'll give me a chance to really study a "finished" boat, while working on it.   I'll hopefully be picking her up in August. :-)  I'll find out here real soon.

I want to hear the story of how that happened to the boat, my guess is that the rower was text messaging, ha ha

Ha ha!  Yeah I know.  I'm dumb founded myself.  I ended up loosing this deal to a local.  Too bad I didn't live closer.  Oh well, it's probably for the better.  Now I'm going to put one together from scratch instead.

One interesting question not yet asked is:  "What would that boat have looked like if it had been a stitch and glue boat?"

 

....particularly so if the gunwales had been a solid glue-up lamination wrapped in glass.  My guess is it would have had some major divits. But no real structural damage.
