Just about a year ago you informed us of the availability of Deks Olje. You posted some pictures of it in a variety of combinations. How have those samples aged? Do you still have the product for sale? Have you been using it on any builds and if so how has it worked out.
While I think that Greg Hatten's boat is beautiful, the money, time and energy just isn't available to undertake all the Brightwork that he did. I am considering an oil finish on the inside of my boat, with varnish on seats and such. Fiberglass and epoxy with varnish on the outer side of the hull.
I am looking for input from anyone with experience with Deks Olje or other similar finishes. I would like a glossy finish, ease of maintenance and quicker initial application. However an oiled finish would certainly be acceptable. I have also considered the oil finish that Dave Z has used with such good results for
portions of the interior.
Thanks in advance for any input. I hope to attend the WBF in April if everything works out.
I did the interior of my 16' Tatman last summer. I was very happy with the way it turned out, with only one exception. The fly deck started to bubble (very small bubbles in pockets across the deck) towards the end of the season last year. I am not sure what caused this but my best guess is that it was very humid when I was apply the oil, and to be honest I rushed the fly deck. I should have let each coat soak and dry longer. Every other part of the boat looks great. I love the stuff... love it. I have a bunch pics from last summer on my page you can take a look at if you are interested. I will post some more pictures this spring when I get the boat out to do my tune up for the season. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Rick, I did varnish on the fly deck, seats and exterior of hull. On the hull I did varnish over epoxy. Everything else was oiled with the homebrew/down east mix. very good results. I think you'll come to appreciate the soft glow of oiled interior on meranti. Certainly easy to maintain as you know. I think a poly or varnished interior would also be nice, providing you stored the boat dry as possible and kept it out of the sun when not used. My first boat was marine fir, all varnished and it still is a looker, but she's showing some age. How old is that one now Roger?
Wish I could attend the show, but man, I'll be hard pressed to leave the local fishin! Things really heat up back home here.
I agree with Jesse, The large flat areas like the fly line deck and front seat cover are easier to care for and keep clean if they are varnished or have poly.
Yes we sell dek's, both #1 and #2. e There are also a number of messages on the forums that contain home made recipe for " boat soap"
