After Randy Dersham's and Greg Hatten's trip to the Grand Canyon for the wooden drift boat float my interest in the Grand Canyon has been reignited. I turned down opportunities to float it many years ago because of financial and time constraints. while I have more time on my hands I still don't have the money. It doesn't mean I can't dream about going or following what's going on down there. One of the Grand Canyon boating forums I follow recently posted a link:

that I really enjoyed. While floating the portion of the Congo where these kayakers did isn't something most of us will ever consider, I find it compelling to see other folks adventures. See what you think.

I hope that everyone enjoys it. Greg, I think I found the next "Grand Adventure" for you!

ahhh...the money is never the problem  on a grand canyon trip. i was TL on a grand trip that launched about 5 days prior to tom, greg, and randy's trip. we did come up with some gear on our own like a kitchen box (put together at the dollar store and thrift stores for under $100), first aid kits, propane, and a few assorted other items. but the cost for a fully outfitted trip with meals, groovers, three 18' nrs rental boats, and all the nps requirements was about $924 per person for 13 people, 20 days taking out at pearce ferry. that even included a budget for group booze (bad idea on my part..cause of mucho drunken carnage). overall, a small price to pay for 3 weeks in paradise

WOW - that is some kinda adventure!!!  Crazy.  Not sure a wood boat could handle that rapid !!  Rick - I would highly recommend the Colorado Adventure - it was the trip of a lifetime.  Prettiest place I've ever seen and I can't wait to go back.

Take care brother.

So, when is the next trip? I understand your appreciation for the Grand Canyon. I really kick myself for not going when I had the chance. All I needed was the money to get there, the rest was paid for! Not only  are long rivers in wonderful surroundings amazing the change in perspective from city like to extended time in wilderness is truly wonderful too. The big river canyons of Idaho and Oregon while not as spectacular are great experiences too. Impassable Canyon on the Middle Fork, the canyon that holds Slide Rapid on the Lower Main Salmon is cool, the northern end of Hells Canyon are all majestic in their own ways. I just filled up a few new lines your river running bucket list! Are you busy guiding or are you spending time in Missouri?

All the best, your brother in boats and waves,

Rick Newman
