Grant McOme has released a very nice piece about McKenzie River guide, Aaron Helfrich, the Helfrich influence on drift boats, and  some of ther attractions of the McKenzie River. The piece is aired on KGW channel 8 out of Portland. At the end of this video presentation, take a look at some of the other videos Grant has done about the McKenzie and drift boats.

Roger:

Thanks for posting Grant McOme's video.  It's fun to see the old style boats and a nice follow-up to the recent Wooden Boat Festival.

Roger, thanks for the link. It was fun to watch and it will be great to show others that don't understand my fascination with McKenzie Drift Boats. By the way was Prince rowing a Board & Batten style boat in that video?

Yes, the early shots of Prince and Veltie are in Veltie’s light board and batten boats. Other footage includes scenes from an early 1940s trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon in the square-enders, led by Woodie Hindman. The Owyee trip footage is from a KGW TV special that was shot and aired in 1963 or 1964. Grant McOme (Grant’s Getaways) uncovered this footage in the KGW archives. It’s a 50 minute film. It’s quite a show. Narrated by Prince Helfrich the film also features a young Leroy Pruitt (Veltie’s son) on the sweeps, Dave Helfrich  (Prince’s eldest), Billy Pruitt (Leroy’s cousin), and guests Bob and Pat Straub. At the time Straub was an Oregon State Senator and soon to be State Treasurer and then Oregon Governor. Aaron Helfrich has embedded this full length feature on his web site (http://www.helfrich.com/). It’s a great trip into earlier Oregon river running, camping and riverside cookery, southeastern Oregon history, geology and fauna. Prince was not only an excellent guide but was also an excellent student of local history, ecology, fisheries and rivers. For anyone interested in taking 50 minutes out of their day to sit back and enjoy a trip down the Wild Owyhee, then go to Aaron’s web site.

I will do that. Does Randy Dersham know about the footage? It would be good for a link for the museum.

I have sent Randy a copy. Video is at www.helfrich.com

Aaron, thanks for doing that. By the way nice coverage in Salmon, Trout Steelheader magazine!
