A buddy and I will be heading down to the Green River in mid May to fish the Green for a couple of days before we head to Vegas.

We have booked a guide while we are there, but we are looking for suggestions for a float to do on our way down there from Calgary.  We were looking for something in either the Jackson or the Idaho falls area that will be not too blown out, and will provide some epic browns, preferably on dry fly.

We will have his Hyde aluminum boat in tow, mine is still a pile of sticks so we will have room another if a local wants to join us.

If there is someone in that area that would like to fish with a couple of guys from Calgary who would be more than willing to recipricate should you make the trek up north let me know.

Thanks gang,

Andrew

The Henry's fork will be fishing great that time and there will be plenty of dry fly action as well, I live 35 miles from there and my son and I fish it all the time and will be pounding it the same time.

hate to break the bad news to you, but with this huge snowpack year, the runoff has already started. the army corps of engineers got caught with their pants down last season by having the resivioir too full, and then had to dump all the inflow to keep up when we had a warm wet spring rainstorm. the river jumped 4x its volume in one day. this year they have already started dumping the dam, and the water is already up. probably will be until mid july. you could mabye find some fishing by wading into the higher country, but you'll hit snow real quick. mid may will be will be high water...10-14k and muddy thru our section of the snake. you won't have any better luck on the south fork either...that will probably be in the 20-25k range. there still could be some good floating in the area that time of year, but the fishing will be blown out. i think the roads in yellowstone will be open. it'll be higher water there too, but if you bring some skis or snowshoes you might be able to get in and find some nice fishing for browns if you can find something thats not totally muddy. you may have good luck on the provo river outside of slc that time of year. not sure what the levels would be like or how it would float in a drifter. but it was running nice when i passed it the other day and it was clear..saw alot of guys out fishing. utah gets a much earlier runoff than we do. hope that helps,

chris

The Henry's fork below ashton dam does not get blown out by the high water that effects the main snake and the southfork, they keep it running clear and pretty low, we were on it last sat and had a great day, and plan on fishing this weekend as well, the month of may offers great caddis hatches and the beginning of the stonefly hatch, there are some mayflies as well, there are several ramps and easy access and easy floats. give me a call if you want to and I'd be happy to show you the river. 208-456-2752. Plenty of nice rainbows and browns.

You guys could probably float Grey Reef in south WY without too much trouble at that time of year.  It's a dam-fed tail water with some huge fish.  Not much to say about the float, but it is good fishing.  I believe the river there is the North Platte.

The North Platte is in a similar snow pack situation.  It will still be very high because the reservoirs above are going to be at flood level.  Also, it would probably be 4 hours out of your way to get over there. Even though it will be blown out, you would be hard pressed to find better scenery than the floats in Teton National Park on the Snake.

Andrew,

The boys hit it on the nose. The Snake was bumped from 500 cfs to 5500 cfs in a week out of Jackson Lake. They don't want the same thing to happen this year with an emergency flush. Its a real bummer because this time of year before run off can be really good fishing.

The Henrys fork would be your only option in Idaho for dry flies. With clear water and dry fly fishing brings a pretty good people hatch up there.

My advice would be to stay on the Green. A B C below Flaming Gorge is a wonderful float and tail water fishing.

Montana this time of year can be good too. But with our ridiculous snow pack around here they could be done too.

Hope this helps

Dutch.

Hey Dutch, who is coming to Oregon?

AJ may be the only one out this year. Due to gas prices and other things most of the Jackson crew are sitting this one out.

Just finished a late 50s Rapid Robert project. Wish it could be sitting on the lawn. Gonna try and post some pics soon.

Great, thanks for the reply! Yes post some pics soon. I wish I could be seeing your boat there too. I headed there now, stopping in Salem, Oregon for my internet fix.

We were hoping to do a half day float on the Henry's fork on the way down to the Green. It is about a 13-14hr drive to Dutch John so we were going to take a break near Ashton & stay the night there.

The date we were going to fish would be May 15.

How long do they increase the outflow from the dam?  Would things be cleared up by then?

We will be fishing the Green for 3 days, but we can always add a fourth.

Andrew

May 15th should be great on HF, we fished sat and things are heating up with a few blue wings but not real good yet, the flows from the Ashton dam are pretty consistent, not ever to high, for your trip the caddis should be in full swing and the fishing should be great, my son and I will be fishing every week thru the rest of April and May, I'll keep you posted on how it goes and the fishing, the Henry's will make  a nice stop and the fish here are a bunch wilder than those you will get on the Green.

let me know when you get in the area if you want to float with us.

That is great Dan.  We were thinking about booking a guide to do a half day so we can get into Dutch John eariler, but if the timing works out we may take you up on the offer to float with you.  Being unfamiliar with the HF, it is nice to have a local to keep us out of trouble.

If we get into Ashton we may even be able to get a walk & wade in that evening.
