I need to set my seats.  I am building a 16' X 48"  boat kinda from fletcher's book.  How much below the center line of the oar locks should I set the rower's seat?  I would rather put in a different (something other than galvy pipe and a goofy plywood hanger) sliding front seat set up any suggestions?  pictures of the front set up would help.  I am hoping to put in the seats tonight after the kids go to bed.

here is a pic of the boat
I did a search for this last year when i had the same question, and i remember people saying 16" so thats about where i put mine. I also sit on a 2" thick throwable, so that probably put me up around 18" off the floor.  seems to feel just right on the oar lock height, etc sitting there. nice looking boat btw..like the curved stem.
16" down from the oarlocks?   or 18" up from the floor?  By the way I am 6' tall.  I like the stem too.
16" off the true floor of the boat, with sitting on the throwable i am somewhere around 18"  off it and i'm 5'10"  with long legs.

Sit in it.  buckets, bricks, lawnchair, etc...  get comfy. I built the same boat twice from Roger's plans, and didn't put my seat on a slider.  Put it between frames.  My height is 17" from floor (not floorboards) and oarlock bases sit 1 inch above gunnels.

Front seat is alot lower, so I can see over the passenger while rowing.

I will tell you that I am thinking of re-doing my interior like my latest boats.  A seat rail with side pockets.  Check my blog for photos, or dig around here.  www/.thtchronicles.blogspot.com

Any boat work will have to wait.  lots of floats to do this summer and I'm in the middle of a complete restoration of a 1944  Ford 9n tractor.

Dave is right.  Don't start guessing or making estimates.  You need to get in the boat with the oars in the locks.  When you push down the oars you want the blades high enough out of the water to clear waves.  I am 6 foot 4 and if the seat is too high I have trouble with my knees getting in the way when I want to move the handles forward.
