Just finished stripping all the red paint off the oars and coated with 4 coats of boat oil. I have seen pictures of oars that appear to have a layer of fiberglass over the edge of the tips for protection. Anyone done this. I don't really want to put the slip on protectors.

The wrapping over the tip you see on commercial oars is dynel, not fiberglass. It's really tough stuff, especially when impregnated with graphite epoxy. But if you already oiled those oars, it's a bit too late to be going back to epoxy. That ship has sailed. Now that the wood is impregnated with oil, the goo won't stick. You are best off just leaving these things standing in a bucket of oil between trips with the tips soaking.

Yup....agreed guys. Slip on protectors trap water and the oar tips ( that were supposed to be protected ) will eventually get soft and rotten. At this point, nothing wrong with letting wood oars be wood oars.

Here's a Sawyer Oar that used to have a boot on it. You can see the line where the boot used to be.I have also included a picture of the oar after I repaired it. I previously posted a series on the oar repair.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess I'm just going to go with the end result hearing the glass reinforced tips is a too late project.
