"Put a lid on it..."

I saw "lids" on a drift boat a couple years ago at the Wooden Boat Festival. After getting caught on the McKenzie in a spring down-pour a week later, I realized what a good idea it was. I had a couple of requests to show more details... here's a closer look.
I picked the grain of the wood to go side to side instead of front to back...

On the inside I added foam for flies, a wooden dowell for tippett and a spacer for misc.

I added magnets to keep the lids from flapping on the way to the river...

Loaded and ready to head out...

After adding lids I didn't have a good place to set my coffee - so I added a "wing shelf" to both sides. I use the wing on the left to store my spare oar lock so when I need it... I will know WHERE IT IS !!!

Only cost a couple bucks for the hinges and magnets. Added weight = about a pound.

As always amazing! I still think you could be a watch or violin maker. Are you sure you weren't named Stradivarus (sp?) in a prior life? I am really hoping to be at the festival so I can meet you and see your boat in person! Unless things change radically I won't have a boat but would be available to help out.

Thanks again Rick... hope you can make the Festival. I want to give equal "air time" to all the mistakes I've made - (I only post pictures of the stuff that "worked"). Truly, I'm a "boot strap", self taught, boat builder... with an obsessive streak that's right on the edge of insanity.

Hey - I owe you a cold beer for leading you on that "off-roading" adventure to the take-out on Saturday!! So sorry about that. If we had been pulling boats, it would've been a mess!!
Back to the lids... the pictures are pretty self-explanatory, but let me know if you need help or tools - my guess is, you've got everything you need and then some. Your boat looked good in the water on the McKenzie and the Willamette. Some of the best grain I've seen in a fir boat... nice job of picking out the pieces!!

Thanks man. I have decided to do the same thing, although from the looks of it I will be using thinner wood on top (3/8"). I am in the process of building, I will post some pics when I am done.

Cool... can't wait to see "pics". One of my favorite additions was that fly fishing "organizer" in the right fly box... before I added that, I had tippett and flies all over the place.
Thinner wood for the lids should work fine - I never put any weight them.
