Has anyone stained the wood on their boat before varnish. Mine is now raw after removing 45 years of paint and I am thinking of adding a light oak and a dark oak stain to the plywood hull and gunwales to add  color before varnish. Any thoughts?

Is your boat Douglas Fir? Douglas Fir has the propensity to check as it ages because the summer wood and winter wood don't shrink or swell at the same rate. The known cure to keep this from happening is a lamination of four or six ounce fiberglass cloth. You may have issues with the epoxy of oil based stains. You may have to try an analine based dye or stain product to achieve adhesion. Take a look at Steve Putnam's boat rebuild that we did several years ago. He did all the sanding and I did the glass work. He could have finished it bright with varnish but didn't want the hassle of sanding and replacing the varnish every few years. Guitar builders and refinishers use a lot of analine dyes and their suppliers might be a source. Probably not found in the big box stores.
