East coaster looking for some insight for car camping in Oregon this summer. I want to see where it all started. I am coming out with my wife and daughter for a week and want to visit the McKenzie valley for few days (Crater Lake, etc.) in August. Flying to Portland and renting a car and then we are wide open for a week...nice campground next the river with decent fishing close?  Will trade float for someone coming to PA. thanks

Someone from that area will be along shortly; You will very much enjoy your visit to this coast.I highly recomend a day charter trip on the ocean out of Pacific City;there are only a few left, but they launch dorys off the beach into the surf, the surf is somewhat calm there, but from what I here, not as calm as east coast. Punch in Eagle charters,Pacific City.

i would be happy to take ya for a float on the McKenzie in August, its a great time of year for a day float

When in Portland, visit Voodoo Donuts and Powell's book store, both amazing places. Especially if you like donuts and books!

+1 for Voodoo donuts hehe. +1 for charter fishing too. I hope you will love your trip, incredible country.

If you want the best campground on the McKenzie, it is Paradise.  You could call the McKenzie Bridge Ranger Station (U.S. Forest Service) to see about reservations.  There are many campsites there, and a great hiking trail runs through it so you can hike upstream and downstream.  That portion of the McKenzie is managed for wild rainbow trout, catch and release.  It is a blue ribbon wild trout fishery.  I have lived on the McKenzie for 35 years, and boat this section a lot.  If you want to get hooked up for a guided float trip, I can help with several names of guys I have fished with and boated with who are knowledgeable about this section of the river.

Get ready for some awesome Pinot Noir and local craft beers.
