About Me:
I am nearing retirement and would like to build a drift boat this winter. I have been perusing your site and am impressed with the wealth of information. I have spent a number of years fly fishing in Yellowstone and fished from drift boats. Many rivers in this area of the country like the Cumberland, Clinch, Wautaga and others are perfect for these boats. I have lots of questions

Frame construction wood

Plan to been construction on a 16 foot double ender with transom this winter.  Much of the suggested wood for framing (with the exception of douglass fir) is not available in my area of the country (Kentucky). Is white oak too heavy? Can anyone suggest a supply house?  I have looked at Noah on line.  And generally, how much board feet would I need for framing material?  My boat will be modeled from a Woodie Hindman design. Lots of questions with more to come.  Thanks, James Browning

James, having hung around here for a few years I have had the pleasure of welcoming many new members. I have also had the pleasure of watching folks learn many new things about wooden drift boats. Those that have had the time and taken the initiative to read the previous posts here have learned the most. Building these boats almost always follows the same pathway. What wood, what epoxy, what weight fiberglass, what finish, where do I get a trailer, etc. Someday I would like to compile a list of the answers to all these topics to make life easier. Until that time I recommend Roger Fletcher's book Drift Boats and River Dories. It is avail at riverstouch.com.

Welcome aboard!
