Alright, here we go - my first wooden boat; time to get down to business. A double ender w/ transom right out of Roger's book. To date:

1) Read Roger's book (a few times)...Needless to say, essential.

2) Built a model using Auto CAD - see pic below. Let me tell you for those of you who were never to handy or sucessful with model building, I think this is a really nice alternative. As a preface, alls I could ever do with my hand-built models as a kid was to half build them (all botched up - I think small stuff gives me fits). The end result would enivitably be to then shoot them up with a BB gun. Ironically, boat models were definitely the most spectacular especially when on the Monocacy creek and on FIRE (I remember an aircraft carrier in particular).

However, not to be ignored, the modeling thing as Roger suggests is really a good way to wrap your head around the whole project. After this, I finally understood the whole mitre thing and this is comming from a guy who did a decent bit of time in a cabinet shop. Really a good idea and except for a few minor details (like te fly deck and such) it is all done.

3) I used the model, book, and information from this site to develop a materials list. I priced a couple of sources for wood and got a few quotes. For those who have never done this, this is a real pain with great uncertainties especially without a nearby source of marine plywood. I think I found at least an honest source after much prodding and scoping.

So far, it's only consumed a mere 3 months of my life. Looking forward to the next umpteen.

For now, next task: Clean the garage!

That's pretty cool! In my case, I think it was harder to build the model than it was to build the boat. I'm a carpenter, not a doll-house builder, and the little work was very difficult compared to big ol' sticks. The model took many evenings over the winter. The boat took seven days.
The plans for that boat in Roger's book are spot on, except for the bottom bevel on bottom frame bevel on frame #4. Should be 2°, not 6°.

I know enough about autocad to know that took a bit of time and is far above my capability. As far as the BB gun and floating models on fire...I can relate. M-80's tended to be quite useful for model demolition as well.
Consumed 3 months? I suppose that makes you obsessed like many on this forum. I like to think it gives me something constructive to think about as I fall asleep each night.

I guess I'm lucky. It took me 4 days for my marine ply to be delivered...looked like good stuf to me. Good luck on your project and post pics.
