"First off I'd take an awl or a sharp nail and poke around in the suspect area to see if the wood is solid. Just looking at the pictures it appears you have some rot going on. Have you flipped the boat and checked out the bottom? Unfortunately…"

"The only boat I know of that's 49" on the bottom is a Montana Riverboats Beavertail, which was meant to be built as a stitch and glue boat.  Without any ribs. When I build those I ignore that 1/2" sliver either side of the…"

"Looking great Rick!!! You know it's amazing to me how differently I look at boat pics now than I did 7 months ago when I started my restoration. I guess that means I've learned a few things along the way. Thanks to people like you who…"

"Thanks Rick!!!  That's probably what I'll do. Just was a little concerned with the integrity of the bottom with the additional joints. But if you say good to go, I'll take that direction.  She's coming…"

Rick Newman replied to Peter Honsberger's discussion Question - side patch
"Peter, you could also do a more traditional scarf joint with 1 in 12 ratio on either side of the boat. Same concept as in the middle of the boat when plywood is commonly scarfed together. Plenty of examples of how to do so on here. Nothing special…"

Peter Honsberger replied to Peter Honsberger's discussion Question - side patch
"Another thought occurred to me.  Lap scarf about a 3" x 2' piece on either side of the bottom piece at the widest point. Center the bottom on the boat. Then attach. There would then be only a 1/2" area either side which sits on…"

Peter Honsberger replied to Peter Honsberger's discussion Question - side patch
"Quick question. Run into a little bit of a dilemma. The boat bottom at its widest point is 49" edge to edge. (Ain't it always the way...) 48" is the norm in plywood, as you all know.  Have any of you run into this problem? The…"

Ants Uiga replied to Peter Honsberger's discussion Question - side patch
"The general practice when cutting out plywood (or fiberglass) patches is to use a joint that is more scary flint than butt joint.  A scarf joint provides much more area for the new and Los material to bond.  For scarf joints, a 1:12 ratio…"

"It's a good look'n boat Peter. And from the pics appears well built. Very cool it's a double ender! Don't see many anymore. My Great Grandfather had a double ender Kiawanda dory and I have always had a soft spot for them. Enjoy!!"

About Me:
Grew up on and around my grandfather's wooden power boats all my formative years. He shared his love of the beauty and craftsmanship of these boats. These were his passion. As a tribute to him, I have been on a quest to own and restore one of these. I now have that opportunity to do so and combine my own passion for fly fishing with a restoration of a beautiful wooden drift boat. The process has begun. Other than being on a river with a rod, can't say when I've had this much fun!
