ADHESIVES. HELP....

I will be installing my gunwale's soon and I don't really want to use 5200 for this. Is there another type of adhesive that works well, but in the case of damage, won't destroy everything if I ever have to remove it??

I have used poly resin and glass for the sides of my boat.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

jamestown sells BoatLIFE lifecaulk...a polysulfide adhesive that works great for this application.

Sikaflex 291 LOT is another polysulfide option that I like.

Greg You might consider one of the epoxys. The advantage, in my experience, is the epoxy can be softened with a heat gun and the part removed with a putty knife. I had to remove a whole miscut plank off a canoe. After it set up the plank looked like a blind man had cut it. Merlot was not involved and cannot be blamed.

sorry, i read your post wrong and thought i read chines instead of gunnels...lawrence is correct,use epoxy for this application and the lifecaulk for your chine caps.The chance of ever replacing gunnels is slim and as lawrence said heat will assist in breaking down the bond.

Since you used poly resin epoxy probably will not work.  It does not stick to polyester resins.  That is also the case with using polyester bondo as a fairing compound on an epoxy/glassed boat.

I through bolted my gunnels without using adhesive on either the outer or inner gunnel.  They have held up fine and can be removed for varnish, painting, etc.

Polysulfide adhesive may work, test it first.

3M 4200 is a good non permanent alternative to 3M 5200.  they also have 3M Weatherban Sealant Tape. I have never used it but it might make a good non messy bond.
