My friend and I are working to re-finish our 16' boat, we've had a very difficult time getting info from local outfietters on how to go about it? We're thinking of just sanding down to original wood (which we started today), but we're debating whether to sand the interior of the boat too b/c it's so labor intensive.
Can we only do the exterior, and is it best to use a polyurethane sealant-min wax, over an oil based wood stain? Or just use the polyurethane over the natural wood?
Also, should we use epoxy under the nose in front or fiberglass?
Some time reading past postings on this pages will provide many answers. Randy has done a good job of gathering and attracting the people with lots of knowledge on these subjects. Some time spent now reading will enlighten you and perhaps confuse you at times but many of the questions you are asking are the same concerns held by many boat restorers. Dave Z has lots of great information both here and on his web site / blog the Happy Trout Chronicles and has done a wonderful job of communicating a very solid viewpoint and set of skills required to both build and finish boats. He is not alone in his sharing of knowledge. Wooden Boat People is a wonderful collection of information and people that can help you out.
