Nails verses Screws

I understand that ringshank nails hold as well a screws. What are the pros and cons of these fasteners for attaching the sides and bottom to the frames?

- Retired, was a Duster Pilot for 30 years then I worked as the Chief Inspector for a helicopter maintenance company for 11 years. I am a "commercial pilot with multi-engine and instrument ratings, a licensed airframe and powerplant mechanic with a current FAA inspection authorization. I have been a fly-fisherman and tying flies all of my adult life. I was introduced to drift boats on the Green river below Flaming Gorge about 20 years ago. A friend and colleague built a Greg Tatman boat several years ago and I have been hooked on wooden boats ever since. So, now I’m going to build me a 16’ Woody Hindman double ender with a transom using the plans in Roger Fletcher’s fine book.

Hi Jerry - S'me again - Don Wakefield. So you know about the San Luis Valley and Alamosa.. Used to be that Frazer was touted as the "icebox of the nation" but now I think Alamosa got tagged with that un-distinction.
Talking about the cold down there.... how the heck I ever stayed so many years is beyond me.
I'm a pilot too - commercial and instrument and own a 77 v-35B that now owns me.
I have lots of memories about coping with the brutal winters in that area - was there for 24 years I think.
The people out here in CA use the word "winter" but have no idea what it can mean.
I am really enjoying the boating and building - more darn fun. Don
My buddy Dan and I built the 16' Woody Hindman double-ender with transom out of lumberyard materials for about $200. ACX plywood, 2x4s ripped down for ribs and gunwales, galvanized bolts for the gunwales, and powder-coated deck screws fir the rest. It's a fine boat, and probably more in the spirit of old Woody than a lot of the Meranti-CVG-brass-epoxy boats being built today.
The second one we built we sprung for ash for the chines and gunwales, as it was kinda scary bending those old pine boards!
