Epoxy or polyester resin???

Ok, I know this is a WOOD boat forum, & I will eventually get started on my wood boat rebuild, but for now I am wanting to lay an aditioinal layer of fiberglass on the bottom of the old junk glass drift boat that I hope to have in the water this summer.

I will PROBABLY get rid of this boat when the wood boat is done.

Question is, do I go with standard polyseter resin that I can get locally for $40 per gal, or bite the bullet & order epoxy at $100 for 1gal (6 qt with hardner) plus freight to Alaska?

Another question.

How much resin can I expect to use on a 48" x 19' boat?  I'm thinking 8oz cloth.

Vance, Polyester will bond to polyester quite well, epoxy will too. Polyester and wood don't play together well. The drawback to polyester is the odor. with your shop being outside if I remember right do the work when it's breezy or take the money you saved and buy a good make and filter setup. Be sure to clean the existing gel coat with  a manufacturer's recommended solvent as wax and polyester don't play well together either.

I would think that the resin manufacturer should be able to tell you how much resin for 76 ft square times two. One coat for the lamination and one coat to fill in the weave and allow for some sanding. (4 feet times 19 feet = 76 feet with an allowance for waste )

8 oz a sq/yd  fiberglass will need 8oz(by weight)of epoxy plus 10-20%to wet out one sq/yd of glass.Not sure about poly resin.

1 gallon of epoxy is about 9 lbs
