Varnishing and color/gloss restorer

Made the mistake of varnishing the inside of my boat. Someone suggested that after the varnished had cured, I could sand with 2000 grit paper and then use the 3M color/gloss restorer which is for gel coat to obtain a smooth as glass finish. Has anyone been foolish enough to try this.

No I haven't but it is a common method to achieve a very smooth finish. I actually have the products to do such an operation but never did.
