Hey folks . . .

Been out of touch for a while.  We (my Boatbuilding class) are about to move to assembly.  All frames are now built for two boats (Trapper and Zs Drifter) and seat components cut.  We have decided that the  boats will both be painted exterior and oiled (Boat Soup) interiors.

We have used all locally sourced salvage-cut old-growth CVG Fir from my friends mill, and had intended to use DF marine ply, but I'm feeling that we should go with okume or some such to eliminate problems with checking in the future on the interior.

Is this the consensus of the group??

At some point, I promise to post photos of the students working.  It's been great fun.

Thanks,

Tom Anderson

Tom:You are correct. DF will check.  Merranti, Ocume, or if you can afford it Sapele, will be best for oiled finish

Good Luck to you and the students

Thanks Lawrence for the re-assurance.  Just wish we had the money for Sapele as I love the richer color.  But . . . Okume it shall be.  Not sure if we'll make it by the end of this school year, but finish we will.

Make them stay after school- forced detention!

Tom, will we see you at the Wooden Boat Festival?

Hi there Rick . . .

Unfortunately not.  As I think I may have mentioned last fall, I've taken on the Head Track Coach position as well and we have a meet on Saturday in Condon, OR.  Sure wish I could get there this year.  I know you guys will have fun.

We will miss you. Keep up the good work!

Rick

Tom, do you have access to Meranti (Hydrotek)? It is cheaper and more durable than Okume and if you get lucky sometimes it is almost as dark and rich as Sapele.

Mike

Hi Mike.  Yes I do (I can still buy wholesale as a builder through Continental Hardwoods).  I was thinking that Okume might be easier for the kids to negotiate being more flexible as I understand.  But . . . I am kind of hung up on the color and didn't realize that the Meranti could be darker in color.  I understand that there is also a difference in grain as well.  Maybe I'll run in there and check it all out.

Crosscut Hardwoods in PDX also has hydrotex...Meranti.  I have a few scraps here in Lyle if you want to swing by for a look...

Thanks Don. I might just do that to check them out. Continental is quite a bit cheaper if you can get wholesale. It would be nice to check out your project boat too.
