Rick, that is a great video, thanks for sharing!
Rick Newman
Hi Rick, I enjoyed the video as it brought back lot's of memories. Our family had a cabin there all through our childhood that my great grandfather built around 1918. My brother and I commercial fished out of PC for a couple summers in the late 70's. Here is a picture of my great grandfather Ralph Wortman (center) in front of his double ender dory. Built by Kiawanda Boat Works in Cloverdale. Picture was taken in the early 50's.
Howdy Kurt & my buddy Rick,
Kurt, what dory did you commercial fish in the 70's? I had the "Hook-n-Eye".
Second may I copy your photo of your grand father & share it with he president of th Dorymen's Assn & a South Tillamook county Face book page??
Best regards,
"Cap'n" Bill Hook
Absolutely Bill, please feel free to copy the photo and share it. My parents are looking to see if they have any other pictures of Grandad Ralph's boat. The dory my brother and I had was Gabriel Zephyr.
I remember that boat...Is it on the Dorymen's memorial Wall?
Not sure Bill. The last summer I fished was 1976. I think my brother virtually gave the boat away the following summer as he ended up not fishing. It was not in great shape, fiberglass was pealing off the bottom and I think there was some dry rot going on as well.
I sent the photo to Paul Hanneman, the Co-president of the Pacific City Dorymen's Assn. He reliped :Great photo! Thanks.
Paul is right about the date. After talking more with my Dad, he thinks the boat was built in the early 50's but the picture was taken most likely around 1957 or 1958.
Several other people on the South Tillamook County Face book page have remembered Ralph. Great tradion there...
We're going to break-in Rick (the starter of this thread), into Pacifc City dorymenship & fishing techniques this summer. I've known Rick since like 1969 & he 's a heck of a great guy.. In fact he loaned me a driftboat until I can get mine rot free. He just built a BEAUTIFUL 16' dory that is such a work or art I'd hate to use it....more like a fine piece of furniture.
Regards,
Bill
Thank you Bill. I am glad people still remember my great grandfather. Unfortunately I was too young to really know him very well. I have enjoyed our discussions here about him.
Have fun on the ocean with Rick's gorgeous dory. I hope you guys post pictures here of the maiden voyage. I was on his page looking at pictures of the boats he has built and they are indeed beautiful works of art!
