Anchor rope
1 Reply

I've been using some pretty sub-par three strand rope for both an anchor rope and bow line, and it's time for a replacement. One good thing about the current rope is the thimble in an eye splice at…Continue

For the last several days, I've been having problems with this site - it won't load using Chrome on Windows 7 and it's painfully slow on my Mac. Are others having issues, or is it just my luck?Continue

David Witton replied to erik heiden's discussion Anchor release arm question
"Holding power relates to anchor scope. The higher the rope leaves the boat, the more line needs to be out to achieve the same scope. My anchor line exits about half way up the transom -  if your anchor arm is mounted at the top of the transom,…"

David Witton replied to JC Smith's discussion Boat cover
"JC The cool thing about the Montana Canvas cover referenced in Bennett's link is that it's made from long haul truck cover material - designed to spend a lifetime at freeway speeds. Whatever you choose, be sure it's a full coverage…"

David Witton replied to Kirk Miller's discussion To knot the end of your anchor rope or not to knot. That is the question.
"I was reading an older thread on this site recently where none other than AJ DeRosa suggested tying an overhand slip know with a long tail at the end of the anchor rope. That way if the line ran out to the know and you needed to dump the anchor rig,…"

David Witton replied to Shawn Baker's discussion Fir vs Meranti dory floor
"One trick to bending the 1/2" bottom is to deliberately leave extra length at the stern. Start fastening midships and then forward to the bow. Now you can use clamps or weights on the overhang you've left at the stern to bring it tight to…"

David Witton replied to Dan Poole's discussion Wood boat covers?
"Dan I'm really happy with the cover I got from Montana Canvas a couple of years ago. It's great for storage, but also for trips down gravel roads to the put in, where pebbles get kicked up from the truck tires and can chip the finish coat…"

David Witton replied to Andy Pruitt Heisler's discussion Inside sheer rail repair
"Gunwale (pronounced "gunnel") is defined as "the upper edge of a boat's side". It defines the sheer line of the boat, and on dories consists of an inwale and and outwale. So yes, sheer rail and gunwale describe the same…"

David Witton replied to Andy Pruitt Heisler's discussion Inside sheer rail repair
"White oak or ash. Kurt's suggestion is right on (as usual) and will add a bit of strength to that area. I'd add blocks to both sides. "

David Witton replied to Andy Pruitt Heisler's discussion Inside sheer rail repair
"Seems like to do a decent job, you'd want to scarf the missing piece on - that means removing the existing piece. At that point, it might be simpler to install a new inwale (inner gunwale)"

David Witton replied to JC Smith's discussion Estimating resin qualtities
"When I was building my boat, I was told that for 10 oz of cloth, I'd need 10 oz of resin. So if the bottom of a 16' boat uses 4 yards of 22 oz cloth - total 88 oz - I'd need 88 oz of resin+hardener. Hope that helps. "

David Witton replied to Dusty's discussion First build
"You're right - the frames (side and bottom) are all cut from 3/4" stock. The disparity you mention is just a quirk of the plans you're using. "
