Boat progress from the past week.
Thought I would post some progress this morning... took a few pics yesterday as I was cleaning up... Probably would have moved a little further yesterday, but it was Mother's day so I called it early.

The horns are on the kneebrace and rough sanded to take the hard edges off.
The flyline deck is fit and about ready to be varnished.

After carefully measuring and re-measuring I drilled the frames to accept the seat pipes for the passenger and rowers seats, cut the notches in the bottoms of the seats for them to slide in, and trimmed the pipes where they meet the supports. The seat supports are bolted in temporarily (I will remove all the seats and hardware to finish sanding the interior of the hull - then do a final bolt down after it is all oiled and ready for final assembly). I am planning to cut a wood plug and insert it into the end of the pipe where it is exposed, drill a hole to insert some threads in the end, that way I can use a nice knob to cover/tightened the ends of the pipe to the supports. I suppose I will keep my eyes open for a decent looking set of knobs... I may use them to hold on the casting kneeboard as well to keep it all uniform. I drilled bolt holes and fit the rear seat as well. Trimmed the stainless bolts to fit the acorn nut properly and called it good.

The last thing I did yesterday was to mix up a batch of epoxy/woodflour to make a nice dark fillet to fill the screw holes in the seats. I like the look of the contrasting little "dots" of dark fillet against the POC seat frames. I will sand the "dots" flush and smooth next work day and start prepping them for final finish (Varnish). I still need to tweak the notches cut into the bottom of the seat frames where they ride on the pipes for that perfect fit - but the rough fit looks pretty close and with some minor sanding here and there they should be right on. These seats will use a little notched piece of UHMW as a seat lock to hold them down and make for easy removal for cleaning, etc.

With the seats in it is starting to look more and more like the finished product.

Here are a few pics - thanks for looking!
Jason

Flyline deck and horns fit into place... I changed the way the cleats hold the flyline deck...

Fillet "Dots"

This is where I want to plug the end of the pipe and fit a nice knob on there for a clean look...

Dave,
Yes it has a rear rope seat... I can't wait to get that interior oiled.

Looking good Jason.

Wait till you oil that thing. You are going to love it. I guess I just noticed that this is has a rear seat! Nice!

When I was at the McKenzie River Wooden Boat Festival I noticed an interesting fix for the ends of the pipes. I didn't get to speak to the maker of these pieces, however I did get a picture. I will post it today. Apparently these parts were made on a lathe. The boat show was a great resource.

Mark,
Thanks for the compliment! Thanks for looking, and yes we all hope things take a good turn in the near future. Living in the Detroit suburbs we have been feeling the pinch of the economy as well. (we literally live across the street from the GM world headquarters). Stay positive... and let us know how it is going when you get back to the boat. What type of boat are you planning to build?

Greg,
The pipes are plated, and once the knobs are on you won't be able to tell on the ends where they are cut...
I spent too much time cutting the chine notches, and although they are not perfect they seemed to fit the chine fairly well. I liked the laminated horns on your boat - that is why when the option of doing them like that (thanks Sandy) I was all for it. I will hopefully be getting to some varnish work in the next few weeks... I will post some pics as I go. Thanks!

Jason,
Excellent progress!! Are your seat support pipes "brass" or plated... they look great. You did a nice job with your chine cuts - very clean. Your horns look really good too - can't wait to see those "light up" when you put oil or varnish on them.
Well done. Thanks for posting.

Jason, I am very impressed with what a beautiful job you are doing on your boat. I look forward to all your progress reports. Unfortunately, the economy caught up to me and my boat building plans. I am having to live vicariously through you and the other boat builders right now. I'm confident things will start to get better soon.
Keep those pictures coming, the detail in them is great!

Tight lines, Mark G
