No real plans "Drift Boat Build"
Hi! I'm going to build a drift boat. I haven't read any books or got any plans. I'm just going to wing it and get ideas from WBP.

I called Rings End, My local lumber yard and they carry marine grade plywood. Today is my second day thinking about building my own drift boat. And this is the second day checking out WBP. From what I seen and vary inspiring are the boats that you guys have built. Phillip Westendorf and Guy Fredrickson have real good information on their forum. Hope to friend these guys and many others. UMmmm Back to looking at pictures for now. Still in the thinking phase. Just a note. * I'm going to paint my boat... Cover up my mistakes.

Mike, welcome aboard. First thing to find is Roger Fletcher's book; Drift boats and River Dories. www,riverstouch.com It will provide a direction to your compass and help you make fewer mistakes to cover up.

Welcome Mike!
I'm a new guy with lots of questions & no answers and will be restoring a Don Hill drifter so I gather all the info here I can.
Roger's book is expensive, but it will more than pay for itself in the mistakes it keeps you from making. I love my copy.

Not much to look at. Will uncover it & get some better pics if winter ever goes away. Been raining for days & supposed to snow tonight/tomorrow. Was snow/rain this morning. I'm ready for spring!!!

Sounds like a good plan. That is going in with no plans. It's kind of fun. I'm shaping the hull of a boat I designed right now. It's been a year and a half of building models to refine the lines and now I am doing it full scale. It is very rewarding seeing a boat come together free form. All that said, if you want to build a traditional framed boat there are plans available for many of the great Oregon boat designs, some are also included in the book. I'd buy that marine ply..5 sheets or so, thick for the bottom thinner for the sides and interior and start squirreling away materials. Look for long lengths of white oak or ash for gunnel and chine stock, and keep an eye out for cheap clear fin for framing. It costs less than you think. The investment is more in your time and labor.

Sorry..I meant clear fir. IPad likes to try and autocorrect me. I am not using any fins on my boat but I am making it out of foam. Here's a few pics of my freeform hull coming together the last few days. Im still disling in the lines full scale but have built about 15 models to refine the lines. Notice the boat next to my old hankinson 16x48.

Nice!!! Can't wait to get started on mine...... I guess I have to read the book... I really was trying to google where to get clear fin. lol. Now I have to look up clear fir. Oh. well I'll get the terminology as I go ....
