help for plan

Hi,

Some years ago I bought plans from spira. I kickly made the squeleton of the boat and stop the project to build my home.

Now the home is built and I'll go on the water. But the plan look not very effective/usable, few angles are gave....I think plans are like the price of it.

 

I'm looking for other plan even on a différent style of boat (was a mackinaw).

I'm looking on skiff. Is there "hybrid" style between conventionnal drift boat and skiff?

I' don't find any thing about skiff plan. Some off you can provide it or have links?

Fabrece, here's a couple of ideas for you. If you check out the search function at the top of the page you can look for skiff's. There a variety of replies but most of them are not for plans but rather discussions on on designs and their similarities and differences. If you follow these blogs you might find a design that makes sense for you. Have you also looked at Wooden Boat Forums, there are perhaps more skiff builders there than here?

Look at the Don Hill website for plans for a drifting pram.  Also, Glen-L for a variety of pram designs.  For skiffs check out wooden boat.  They have designs for a variety of small row boats with flat bottoms.

I finally thinking to buy a plan from the montana drift builder Freestone in 15ft. Is it a simple boat to built? Is there anybody who made o,ne of it? But my problem is that we don't have so much big river where i leave and a 13 ft will be best????

I have build a Montana boatbuilders freestone guid and it is a great boat. If you have a family I wouldn't build anything smaller. You might also consider their freestone skiff if you don't have much white water that you will be floating. Buy jasons plans and enjoy the build. It isn't hard at all the way he builds boats and they row great. The best flyfishing boats anywhere. In my humble opinion.

It's really fine to found this community on the web.

i'm very alone for that in France. This is not cultural for fly fishermen to drift. i have a watermaster for the moment but the boat is for drifting with friend and having fun. With family too!!

Keep us posted on your build. I have finally started on my boat, it has taken me almost two years to get a work place organized and all materials purchased. I plan  to have it finished very soon. Wish me luck. I have a brother in law that speaks French if you ever need some interpretation. He lives just outside New York City.

 

If you come to the western United States we could fish together, anyone that can catch a bright green fish can show me something!

Fab, all I have done so far is prepare  sub assemblies, scraping, routing and sanding. However my epoxy and S-Glass arrived.

Today I test my epoxy system. I am using System 3 epoxy with a medium hardner and then placing Duralar, an acetate sheet over the epoxy to provide a smoother finish.

Brad Dimock, an incredible boat builder/historian/riverman/??? that often posts here. He posted a series on this technique but he used West System epoxy. So he appropriately advised that I test before I commit to fiberglassing anything with that system.

 

If the test works out then I will apply epoxy  and then also fiberglass to the inside of my sides while they are laid flat on a table. Then I will have some pictures to share.

Can you tell us more about the region where you live; Pyrénées Atlantique? I would guess that you are in the Atlantic side of the Pyrenees mountains. I would presume that it is a beautiful place with nice mountain streams and outstanding mountain scenery. How is the fishing, again I would presume that in many of the streams you would fish for trout, what else besides those amazing green fish are available?

 

Have you investigated the availability of marine plywood and epoxy? Unfortunately we no longer have good quality native wood plywood available. Our great forests of Douglas Fir no longer provide good wood, free of defects and at a fair price, we must import wood at a high price!

Fab, here is a link to  Mt. Stuart, Washington State (click on the words to see the picture) my favorite mountain, which is about 40km from my birthplace. I grew up fishing small streams one to three meters in width for "Cutthroat" trout. A large one would be maybe five cm long. I stood on top of this mountain in 1974.

 

I have no training in the french language but can read it and get a basic idea of what is written. However If I were to try to write it you would have to laugh!

Hi Rick,

Yes I am from Atlantic Pyrénées and we have one of the best place in France for Trout flyfishing. Unfortunately, flyfishing is not developped like in us and very lot of people kill fishs....

The place is really nice and I often say:"If I want best fishing and leaving, I only have Scandinavia, North America, Patagonia or New Zeland in option".

We have a very similar Mountain than you like as symbol of a valley near I leave as you can see

 

We also have the last big french Salmon river where fishing is autorise and where we can take few salmon up to 10kgs (Gave d'oloron) (30 of them at this time of the year and a good year is 150/200 for rod fishing....in 100kms reiver, very poor for around 1000 fishers)

 

We have (in my thinking) good wine and (Jurançon) and food with some cheese and mountain meet préparation....

 

Yes nice place where the only stuff we don't have is drift boat....
