Stuber, are you running a motor? Is your boat currently registered? Most of the time in my limited experience registration is a method to collect taxation of vessels that use fuel. I have hauled boats to Idaho and Montana that never had registration and never had anyone question why I didn't. I will continue to do so and do not plan on registering it. I will however look online to see what I can find out. I would consider it unfair taxation if you have already paid registration of a motor vessel in one state. I would presume that like a non commercial motor vehicle it would only have to be registered within the home state. I'm sure a motor vehicle registration and title place could more formally tell you.

Rick,

Glad to hear that for the most part its all about taxing motor boats. Here in WA it seems if the boat does not have any form of power i don't need to register it, or at least no one has ever said anything about my kayaks or the drift boat yet. So i guess i will continue on with my assumption that it is better to ask forgiveness than permission.

Cheers!

You will need invasive species stickers for Idaho and mabye Montana.. I think Oregon may have that requirement too. They are not transferable between states Unfortunatly , and they Definatly have checkpoints. I'd do a little research. I think the whole thing is a sham to collect taxes year after year. I currently own 6 boats (mostly kayaks) so its $30 a year just in state. Then if I wanna take a boat out of state i have to register it there too.

There is no need for any permits or invasives stickers for MT.  I was down there last week with a boat registered in Alberta floating the Missouri River around Craig.

There was a mandatory boat inspection at the launch one morning and there was no mention of anything.  They were asking questions about which waterways the boat had been on recently and they took a look through the anchor rope etc. for aquatic weeds.

I have floated several rivers in MT, and have never come across a requirement for out of state/country registration or permits.  Just a fishing licence.

Oregon requires an invasive species permit.  It is $7.
