Ok, I will be restoring or "fixing up" a 15' Don Hill.  No major damage that I have noted (see pics under my name) except for 1 compression crack in the floor.  Two transom trim pieces with rot that need replaced.

My question is what tools will make my project much easier.

Here's what I have.

Small chop saw

Small table saw

variable speed saber saw

18volt 3/8 drill, skillsaw(small), recip saw (all Ryobi)

3/8 & 1/2 corded drills

skill saw

1/2 sheet elec sander

Sandcat belt sander (old)

Normal selection ofhand tools, air compressor, etc.

What would you add?  Is the multi tool head for the Ryobi worth adding?

What sanders (type) would you recomend?  Would an HVLP sprayer be a good choice for paint when the time comes???

I'm not overflowing with cash so I want to add a tool here/there so I'm ready when I start the job.

Boat will needcomplete refinishing, but has no glass on it right now.

Vance I would like to respond to your post about one time rebuild!I have two woodies and every winter they get some type of rebuild. You have to have a love for these old wood boats because they need tender loving pasionate care almost every winter if they are put to good use every season! Enjoy, Terry

Yeah Terry I had always wanted a wood drift boat even though everyone told me about the maintanance.  All my friends have alum or glass.  I picked up theglass boat last year dirt cheap because it's uglier than sin & needed some help, but I figured it would work till I built a woody.  Then less than a month later I found the Don Hill & decided it would be better than building from scratch.  I think y 9yr old son & I will enjoy the loving maintanance!

Vance keeping up with these boats is a lot of fun and gives a guy something to do in the winter when things are a bit slow! And every where you will go with that boat people will be drooling and wishing they had one! It looks like it will be a nice rebuild! Enjoy. T

Terry,

If you or anyone else who visit this forum ever get bored and are looking for something to read after you've been here and followed the great builds here, try following this:

This a post following the building of a wooden boat by a fella in Montreal, CA.  As a few of the followers have stated   "Probably the greatest thread in the history of the WoodenBoat Forum".   It's 135 pages and growing every week.  It has had over 553,000 views.  The builder has a way with words and it's a great read.  I have been following it for about a year and a half and each visit is an adventure.

Keep looking,

Dorf

dorf, I have also been following this build and enjoy Peter "Lemonhands" humor. I keep up on lots of the postings there and learn a lot. Bob Smalser is a fountain of knowledge and Jay Greer is too. they are my "Toolman" hero's. Jay is they guy that convinced me to use a straightline sander. It is a wonderful tool. I'm sure that more expensive one's would last longer.

Today is the day to paint my boat. The primer is smooth, the temperature is adequate and the wind isn't blowing. Pictures soon.

Rick "Toolman" Newman

looking forward to pics Rick!

Weather sounds nice.  temp here right now is probably in the teens with a 15mph wind.  No painting for me today!

Hey Toolman Rick,

Here's another one with lots of good info.  There's a fella who uses PAR as a name and he's a weath of good advice along with many other that contribute there.

We need some more porn too.
