New Guy and my New Boat

Hello All,

I'm Kai, I've been working on a 16 footer on and off for about three years now. Finally got it in the water and it feels great. I've been meaning to introduce my self for some time now and thought I'd do it with a question but since you all covered everything in the forums so thoroughly I never got a chance. Well here she is with my building partner. Thanks for all the helpful information, great site!

On another note, I build surfboards for fun too and use an epoxy called resin research. I'm not affiliated with this company at all but thought it could be useful for boats. The cool thing is that it cures clear (no amber tint) and comes with a UV protectant so varnishing isn't necessary. I don't know how it bonds to wood or how it flexes and I was too chicken to use it on my boat (I went traditional - west system and varnish), but it might be a real time saver. 

Lastly, I have some really nice Oregon drift boat images from the 40s that I scanned and cleaned up with photoshop. I know this isn't the place but I can't get the classifieds to open for me - I sell high quality prints of these images. If anyone is interested you can message me. Sorry for the advert!

wow, nice job. who's plan? any spec's you like to share? also, welcome to the forum. as you know, lots of good info and great folks here.

Thanks John - I got a copy of Roger Fletcher's book and sort of went from there. Cedar frames, white oak rails/chine, marine doug fir sides/floor. I couldn't find a white oak piece thick enough for the stem so I cut one down on my property and used that. My father is a retired woodworker so I was able to use his shop and relieve him of left over wood laying around. I think I have 11 types of wood in there, even some koa in the knee locks. The floor boards I made from my parents old redwood deck that I cleaned up. The layout is pretty traditional.

Hello Kai, sorry but the Classified Section does not work. It is part of the canned format from Ning that provides our format. I guess we should some how figure out how to notate the fact that it doesn't work.

Secondly, Brad Dimock did some extensive testing and information of Resin Research some time ago. He reported good things about the product, use the search function to find out about his findings.

Hi Rick,

No problem on the classifieds. I'll have to post those pictures some time though, I think you folks would enjoy them.

I will check out the resin research thread. Seems like good stuff to me and because the surf world is so demanding, he is constantly refining his products. 

I hook them and let my partner reel them in... most of the time anyway :)

Kai, Great looking boat, really. Awesome color and use of wood. I would love to build a SUP out of wood, is that realistic or would it be too heavy?

Thanks Robb, I've seen wood SUPs but they are hollow and constructed much like airplane wings.
