Hey guys, I'm new on this forum and like all new guys I have a couple of questions. I am ordering "Drift Boats & River Dories" by Roger L. Fletcher and would like to know how detailed his plans in the book are. Does he give you the angles that the frames need to be cut at or is it just basic plans? I am an experienced carpenter / cabinetmaker with 20 years of experience. I plan on building a 16 foot framed boat for use in northern Indiana and SW Michigan. Thanks in advance for the help.

I can't answer your question on the book, but here's some quality plans and a fine website with very good reading...  simply google "Don Hill Drift Boat".

To get those plans you need to order the specific plans from Roger. Read the book and decide which of his wonderful boats you want to build. Then order the plans from him at Riverstouch.com.

The description says that detailed plans for 10 of the boats are in the book. That is why I posted the question to begin with, how much detail is in the book? Thanks.

The book is detailed but doesn't contain drawings, see the note below from Roger's web page.

"All plans are designed for free-form frame construction, and they also lend themselves to stitch and glue construction as well. Plans are the same as they appear in the book except they are laid out on 18" x 24" vellum at 1" or 1-1/2" to the foot in scale, depending on the plans."

A familiar quote related to boat building is " A cabinet maker works to the closest 64th and a boat builder works to the closest boat."

Good luck on your build, we look forward to pictures!

Nick,

I am building the Double Ender with a Transom by Woodie Hindman from Roger's Book.  There is everything you'll need to build the Framing and Hull panels.  I laid out half each of the frames full size on poster board.  Roger gives you the angles for the bottom and sides of each frame member.  I just checked and it is true for most if not all of the designs in his book.  It's a "Must Have" book if you are planning on building.  Worth every cent!

As a carpenter with your experience you won't have any trouble figuring out the design and dims.  If you get hung up on something all you half to do is ask here.  There is a wealth of help & experience here, all willing to help.

Phillip, I have been following your build and I am impressed. I would like to try it but just don't have the time for a strip build right now. I will be using Ash for the frames and marine-ply for the sides and bottom. More then likely it will also be painted since our rivers in this area are muddy. At least I wont have to worry about it getting beat up on rocks. When the book gets here, I'll start on the frames. Thanks again for the information, I look forward to getting started.

Nick,

I don't think I'd ever build another Cedar Stripper like the one I am currently building.  I don't think there is enough $ to convince me to do it, by anyone.  I don't think I'd live long enough either.  I thought at the time it would be cool to make one that looks like my Stripper Canoe.  But I have grown wiser these last couple years.

Having watched others' builds here using ply I have become somewhat jealous in they are doing it much quicker with a high level of Quality Workmanship. Oh well.......

I has been a real prolonged project, but when it's done I'll open a 50 Yr old bottle of Botry's Brandy a friend in college gave me in 1969.  She brought it home from a visit to the Greek Isle of Crete.  Been waiting for a great event to celebrate with it.  That makes it 95 yrs old now.  It better be good and smoooooooth!

Keep us posted, and as Rick N. usually says;  "lots of pictures" please.

The book has everything you need and more.  Get it, you wont regret it and refer to it often.

Nick,

The book has everything you'll need to build that boat.  I'm in the process of building the 16 double ender with transom straight out of the book.  Haven't had any troubles with following the plans in the book.  With the book and this forum you'll have more information than you'll ever need.
