Frame construction wood

Plan to been construction on a 16 foot double ender with transom this winter.  Much of the suggested wood for framing (with the exception of douglass fir) is not available in my area of the country (Kentucky). Is white oak too heavy? Can anyone suggest a supply house?  I have looked at Noah on line.  And generally, how much board feet would I need for framing material?  My boat will be modeled from a Woodie Hindman design. Lots of questions with more to come.  Thanks, James Browning

Rogue River Rapids

I created a little video to help demonstrate the difference between "classes" of rapids for a presentation I recently gave at the WoodenBoat Festival in Mystic, Conn.  Hope you enjoy it - you will probably see some familiar faces in this video of the Rogue River Wild and Scenic Section.

Boat Floor Stain

I purchased a Don Hill 13' drift boat a few months back and have been sanding the heck out of it and trying to bring it back to some semblance of its original beauty. Feel like I'm finally getting there, but I have a few questions on some particulars regarding staining the interior.

First, I was told Cetol Marine is a great way to go for most of the interior. I've begun to apply this to the floorboards and I love the look it gets. My question is: is epoxying the int. floor the best…

Has anyone made oars?

I am thinking of making oars in my spare time.

I saw at the Port Townsend Washington State wooden boat festival a gentleman making large masts that were hollow. He used 6 to 8 tapered angle cut lengths of wood that when glued together make a tapered circular mast. We are talking 80' and longer.   I thought this would be a fun way to make oars. The hole in the center would of course be very small but would the strength of the oar be better because of the way the grain would change…

Boat repair

Last week I had a accadent and my bout sunk. I got out of the Salmon River in better shape that my boat. The back of the boat tore off half way and the oak rails broke near the front and there is a softball sized dent between the middle ribs and also split two ribs. Can a wood boat be repaired? Does any one know if I can get parts for a 16 foot Tateman boat
