Hi Wooden boat fans

Grew up on the McKenzie watching the pioneer guides float by while I fished from the bank as a kid. As a retired yacht builder I have a hard time not having a boat project underway.

Anybody in the eastern Idaho/ southern Montana area?  Give me a shout.

Film: Where The Yellowstone Goes

I was involved in a film two summers ago where we floated the Yellowstone River from Gardiner Montana to its confluence with the Missouri in North Dakota, nearly 700 miles.  My woody and I and cast and crew made a cool environmental documentary film of the journey called "Where The Yellowstone Goes"  You can watch it on itunes movies, or find a copy at www.wheretheyellowsonegoes.com

Drift Boat Restoration

After a few years of chasing down a wooden drift boat here in southern Oregon I found my diamond in the rough. I have looked at Prichetts, Briggs, Steeles and others. Never could find the right one or Iwas always a day late. But that is another story. The one I found is a Rouge River Boat Shop mckenzie style drifter. The shop was owned by Jerry Briggs and I bought the boat from the original owner. It was built in 1971 and I'm glad I will be able to put it back floating the Rogue and other…

Looking for info on who possibly built a boat that I just purchased

Hi folks, new to this site. I just purchased a 14 foot drift boat in Oregon. I am told that it is about 35 to 40 years old. It has double planked spruce on the diagonal set on mahogany frames. I was told that the last name of the builder is Morgan.

Bottom Re-Finish

I decided tonight to start a blog about my process for refinishing the bottom of my drift boat.  I have learned a lot from all the fine folks on this forum since I first joined last fall, and decided that a little chronicle of my process and decisions might help someone else in the future.

Here's a couple things I've learned so far:

  - I really believe it is important to avoid running glass over the chine cap, for all of the reasons stated by others in the many posts on the…

The start of my boat.

Well I am starting my 1972 Don Hill boat. I am starting to sand down the ribs of there 41 year old varnish. If you look closely at the ribs you will see what happens when two guys from the early 70's who are x-hippies will do to a boat when they are sort of in another state of mind if you know what I mean. What ever it was it must have been  real good. Looks like they just dumped the varnish on after the wood burning pictures and then walked away. Lots of dirt, bird poop, bug poop, rat poop.…

Which wood putty?

Which wood putty do you like to cover your screws up on a drift boat? I've used Rock Hard putty and Epoxy putty and both seem to work OK,

Scarfing Jig Design.

I have been asked to share this information with one of the members of this site and am posting it here so others who may be interested in this can benefit.

I made this jig several years ago (2006) while building a cedar strip canoe.  As I have begun to build my Drift Boat, I made changes to accomodate the different pieces the boat requires.  Also I have updated the clamps.  The drawing below has been updated to reflect the revisions.  The pictures shown below is of the current…
