New Zealand Briggs boats build

Andy Hutchinson and I are in Taihape, New Zealand, building a couple open Briggs dories for Whanganui River Dories. Here is Kate Thompson's video of us doing a 90-second freeform build.

We have one boat getting its gunwales on tomorrow, and the second about a day behind, about to get its outer chines. Port Orford Cedrar frames, Meranti paneling, steam-bent White Oak chines and gunwales. And all the gunwale blocks are Tasmanian Blackwood. They'll have… Continue

Interior getting there

Well finally got a chance to get back to the drifter. 43 years of paint removed, now just sanding and a tsp scrub. looking for interior suggestions. I'm thinking on epoxy finish on the ribs, a line X type of finish on the bottom and either oil or varnish on the plywood sides.…

Backing Up a Little

When I made the decision to build a "Kingfisher" Driftboat, a whole lot of other issues came up. Such as the fact that my shop is filled with construction equipment from my construction business that I am no longer doing. I've retired right! Well that doesn't mean I'm no longer attached to the stuff. It's just plain hard to let go of stuff.

My shop is 24 x 36 but with everything I've got in it, it's realistically has a working area of 10 x 10. Stuff has to be moved out, given away or…

Getting Started

I'm building a Jason Cajune Kingfisher from scratch without a kit. I've ordered, my Okoume plywood, and my epoxy from Raka. Studied up the instruction and plans and pursued this board. I've got a shop that's getting organized as we speak to start the build. Tools tuned up, space organized, stuff moved out to make enough room. The shop is essentially 24 x 36 but about 120 square feet has been swiped for my enlarged man cave. Fortunately I've got a good sized exterior work space too. On the to do… Continue

An All Around Wooden Drift Boat

After searching through all the wooden drift boat pictures I could find, I wasn't able to see exactly what I had in mind concerning a removable rear casting brace system.  After weeks of fretting and obsessing, I designed my own plan.  I wanted something that could go from a fly-fishing trip with a person in the front and back of the boat, to a whitewater float trip with…

What kind of boat is this?

Can anyone help me identify this boat?  There are no makings that I can find.  It is 20 feet long and 80" wide in the center.  All wood.  The top arcs slightly from front to back and the bottom is essentially flat.  It's in good shape though in the midst of a restoration.  It looks like mahogany on top.  We suspect there may be a mast (buried in the pile of junk in the pics) but not sure.

Even if you can get me going in a direction without a positive ID, it would be…
