Progress Report 12.27.08

Happy Holidays everyone. Hope you all have some time off to relax and enjoy time with friends and family.

Well the busy holiday has kept me on the go... but I have been able to sneak in some build time.

Worked on the front passenger seat - getting the hinge fit and screwed together. I will probably not attach the lid permanently to the seat frame until I decide which finish I am going to use on the interior. The seat backs are glued and rough sanded as well.

The weep… Continue

Fly fishing the Deschutes

Last Tuesday my friend from Bend and I fly fished the Deschutes very close to the Warm Springs junction. The weather was very cold, but clear. We parked in a camp site parking area and hiked a few hundred yards to the river to begin wading and fishing. My friend forgot to load his waders into the truck and decided to fish in tennis shoes and shorts anyway. I was cold in my chest waders after ten minutes, yet he fished on enjoying every minute. There were five fishermen in the 50-yard stretch of… Continue

Pack's Progress

My boat is pretty much a Roger Fletcher product. I built his model, read his book and had lunch with him to further pick his mind.

Have currently finished assembly of ribs, and milled all 16' Ash to size. When i manage to get my workshop up to 60 I will epoxy ribs-they are Alaskan Yellow Cedar. Trim is Oregon Ash. Stem is whie oak and transom is Honduran… Continue

Boat Progress 11.30.08

Hello everyone - Hope you all had a nice holiday weekend.

I am happy to report I found some time in between family functions to get some work done on the boat.

Most of my work has been on the interior appointments thus far - as well as the frames.

Managed to get 7 of 9 frames rough sanded in the past week, basically getting them cleaned up after I glued them and sanding the excess glue out of the angles on the interior side of the frames... they look decent even though I… Continue

Boat Show Poster

Earlier this year I was asked to illustrate the latest poster for the upcoming wooden boat show. Randy let me do what ever I wanted for the design, I chose to paint a wooden boat (duh) from the inside or looking down into the boat. that is what I find myself looking at when I am just standing looking at my boat, I love how these boats are put together, and that inspired me to do this poster, I used a photo of my boat and one Randy sent me for the reference to paint from. Hope you wooden boat… Continue

Recovery photos of the wrapped boat in Whitehorse.

Only two days after I posted the YouTube video of the Whitehorse Rapid boat wrap Sanderson was contacted by Robb Sipler. Robb was cruizin' the net and found WoodenBoatPeople then realized he was part of one of our blog posts.

Robb helped in the salvage of that boat and I hope will post a bit more of the complete story in the near future. He joined as a member on this site and then forwarded me these photos of the salvage. Right now he's still booked up with fall guiding trips but… Continue

bottom replacement

here is the quick bottom replacement. the owner of this boat was fishing a few days before i got it. the reason he brought it to me is that it was leaking slightly. at first look there was no damage. when i started poking around my hand went through the bottom. the only thing holding the bottom together was the UHMW shoe. anyway if your boat is leaking you have a bigger problem than you think, but it's not the end of the boat. i would recommend that if you have a leak you take care of it before… Continue

C rock... also called Oh Sh#$%... on the Deschutes River, Oregon.

I had to post this YouTube video of exactly what not to do in Whitehorse Rapids on the Deschutes River in Oregon.

I've been told this boat had to be cut off the rock. I'll try to find out more about the actual story and post more… Continue

Progress 11.21.08

Here are a few pics from the work shop...

Been contending with a vehicle issue - blew up the transmission on my van... ouch

But on the brighter side I did get a new Forester with a tow package for the boat!

But in the meantime I have been getting some work done on the boat.

Here are a few pics.

Have the passenger seat under control - glued up the backs today.

Have all the frames glued and will be sanding those out next.…

McKenzie float

Fellow Boaters;

I just sent a message to montanaboatbuilders forum that I was planning on a McKenzie River float for this coming McKenzie River boat show in April. I would like some advice about floating the upper river. I have launched from Paradise in the past. Would like to do above. We will have 2 days at that time to do the float.

2009 McKenzie River Drift Boat Poster to be illustrated by Dan Burr

I was lucky to meet up with Dan Burr earlier this year during some business with the boat shop. I asked him if he would be interested in illustrating the poster for the 2009 Boat Show at Eagle Rock Lodge. He said yes... I feel pretty fortunate. He is working on the poster now and we should be able to share it with everyone in a month or so. Below are a couple of Dan's Illustrations.

Please remember that I asked for a quick poster. I'm sure it… Continue

The fishing is great at Eagle Rock Lodge

Here's a shameless plug for Eagle Rock Lodge. We sponsor the McKenzie River Wooden Boat Festival the fourth Saturday of each April. Look for it next year on April 25, 2009. We will have the new poster up soon.

Fishing has been very good this season and fall is a great time to be on the McKenzie. The October Caddis is starting to hatch and… Continue

Nice job

Good job with the Wooden Boat People, Randy. I think that when this gets up and running it will be a very nice complement to what's already out there.

First Blogs are always exciting!

This is the first post on the new Wooden Boat People social network. It is my hope that this form and social site can be used by boat builders to ask questions, advertise business, help each other, and generally help us all be better builders, better boaters, and better friends.

Enjoy, sign up, and spread the word.
