Strongback or shop monster?

I finally quit dorking around and got the strongback pretty much together for the Kolb boat. This will be the first true Galloway boat built since the early 1930s I think. Buzz Holmstrom built his modified Galloway in 1937, which we replicated in 2001. Although the lines and construction were similar to a Galloway, Holmstrom's Julius F. was a foot shorter, a foot wider, built of better wood, and was all-in-all a far superior boat according to contemporary river runners. As I walk around the…

Woo Hoo! Invited on a 21day Grand Canyon float... Need to build my canyon boat!

Howdy y'all!

Okay... first I need to convince the trip leader that a dory would be a beautiful addition to the trip... THEN I need to BUILD it... FAST :)

I'm thinking Briggs... Possibly a decked Rouge...

Concerns of my trip leader: Carrying capacity of a dory!

We've got 8 people, 21 days and 5 boats including whatever I row... They're a little worried I won't be able to carry my fare share of the load in a dory. I need some…

Kolb Boat Blog

Although I will continue to post entries here that are particularly pertinent to wooden boatfolk, I have finally started a blog for myself that will include not only the progress on Edith, but other ramblings as well that do not need to clutter up the Wooden Boat People pages. If you get a hankering for more details and tangents, look here:

Newbee

Just stumbled on this site and as a one boat builder myself thought it might be nice to share or talk to others about wooden boats.

A Brief History of Wooden Boats & Christmas

I've always been fascinated by the history of stuff and wooden boats are no exception. I'm actually a bit jealous when I read all the neat stuff written by Brad, Roger, and others; it would seem you people out west have a much more "storied" history than us folks here in PA.

Besides, differences in the types of rivers and the availability of plywood, I would guess the biggest reason for us not having much of a wooden boat history is due to pollution. By the mid 1800's we had…

Committed

Well, I'm committed. Or should be. Just received the first half of the lumber for a replica of Emery Kolb's EDITH, which was built 100 years ago this coming summer. The EDITH and its twin, DEFIANCE, rowed by brother Ellsworth, were built out of white cedar planking with white oak framework in Racine, Wisconsin. Brass screws, copper riveted lapstrake. My favorite style of building. The brothers launched in September in Green River, Wyoming, and followed Major Powell's route down the Green and…

Down the Grand Canyon

Sept 28 - Oct 15 2010

We ran on constant 8,000 until the rain came and pumped it up to 11k. It was really cool to see the river running red.

The Zizumara was perfect for the Grand. It tracks well in the big water, doesn't get surfed easily and even stays upright when going sideways though Hermit!

Crystal gave her a high impact test. I ran her into the left wall but luckily hit where a thwart met the hull. Came away…

They float!

We got in last night from a 15-day Grand Canyon trip with two virgin Fretwater Briggsian dories, Lodore and Euphrates, a virgin Alumiweld named Wesley, my old Briggs Cataract, and Andy Hutchinson's firstborn--a 16-foot Briggsian shorty named Woodenshoe. Grand Canyon was running a steady 8,000 cfs and was oh-so-peppy in many places. Wesley flipped in Horn Creek, Woodenshoe did an extended side-surf in Lava without flipping, and the rest slipped through. Here's… Continue

Empty Nest

Last night the last two boats left the boathouse for a test float on the lake. The shop is empty! They were joined by a brand new AlumiWeld from Rogue River Boat Shop. All three will launch Sunday from Lee's Ferry for a commercial trip, along with my '72 Briggs and an Andy Hutchinson dory.

Grandpa's Boat Refurbished

Grandpa's Boat Refurbished

My Grandpa, Robert "Bob" Grubb was a fisherman through and through. Ocean, lakes, rivers, beaver ponds, mud puddles, irrigation ditches, you name the body of water, he was there with a fishing pole in his hand.

Besides having talent in the event of fishing, acting, machining things out of metal (I think he even built a telescope once) he loved to build wood boats. My assumption of the love of…

High side ? Low Side?

What is the difference between a high sided boat and a Low sided boat. Maybe someone could post some examples? Also what is the difference/purpose. Can you modify a boats plan on your own as far as the shape is concerned. Thanks Steve

Back in the boatshop

I'm back in the boatshop for a couple weeks after a four-month hiatus on the river. The Euphrates is nearly done, the Lodore is lagging but we're jamming to get her done for their mutual baptismal trip at the end of the month. A few shots attached.…

Maiden Voyage

Well, the Zizumara got her first taste of the river. We ran the Lower Salmon River in Idaho on 15k...a very fun level! She got her first ding and had to be highsided through Wright Way rapid but still got us safely downstream and back to shore. Such a happy feeling.

Christmas in July

Well, this is it - the grand finale of this big ol' project.

After having finished the insides, I re-flipped the boat and got back to what was left undone on the exterior of the hull. I woul have done this back when the boat was still upside down the first time, but there was some stuff on backorder and I'm impatient; so, here I am flipping the boat again.

Coated the bottom with the graphite & epoxy for about 4 coats. Then I…
