Thanks for taking us along!

Tom, thanks for the photos! I continue to enjoy your photos and the sharing of the story of GEM 1. Your boat looks great and the photo of when you were smiling after an hour on the water said it all! Keep up the good work.

Easey Lift Bolt

Should the easey lift bolt be attached above chine batten or can it be attached flush with the bottom?

Success: The boat is flipped

It took 3 block and tackles and a couple of pulleys but we flipped the boat with 2 people. The inside fillets are now complete and the hull prep for painting will soon commence.

How do you flip a boat?

So, I need to flip the boat over to do some of the fillets and paint the hull... and this is far as I've gotten. Just can't get the boat ALL the way over.

Here is the issue. I'm thinking of adding another anchor and hooking it upto the boat here. Then moving the block and tackle to the lowside and then hauling that lowside up with the rigging.

Any suggestions out… Continue

Willit Float

Greetings all, I am a new member of the forum though I have been lurking here for some time. I managed to aquire a Tatman boat last winter that had been left for dead, outside without a cover for a number of years. The original builder said " it would be easier to build a new one" I got it for nothing which is probably more than it was worth! After spending too much of the '09 season working on it (mostly sanding) I just missed the maiden voyage and will have to wait till spring. Anyway, I owe… Continue

Caulking Joints with Epoxy Resin Paste

Here a tip on using Epoxy Resin like you would use a caulking gun to fill cracks, seal joints, and even 45 and entire joint with fiberglass.

1. Catalyst to Resin Ratio.... For best results use approx. 1-1.5% max 2%

1 cup of resin to 2.4 - 4.7cc

1 Quart of resin to 8.5 - 19cc

2. Mix Cabosil in resin only before you add catalyst

Micro bubble powder (Cabosil)

For 3 cups resim use 1/3 to 2/3 8oz cup Cabosil

For 6 cups resin use 2/3 to 1.5 8oz cup Cabosil

for… Continue

Boat Almost Complete! Check Out My Page of the Boat and Some Fish We Have Caught!

My good buddy Larry is doing a fantastic job on the boat. I had the opportunity to apply two coats of paint on it and finally flipping the boat over to reveal the inside. We were all very excited! Thanks Larry & Judy for all that you do for our family!

whats better!!!!

I'm building a small wooden boat, to go in the north sea in Scarborough, i was thinking whats better to use VARNISH OR PAINT ? i was thinking of using varnish as the boat is made from plywood and it would make it look really nice, but an oil based paint would get it more waterproofing.....please advice ????? will be adding for photos of my boat later today!!!!!

Drift boat restoration

I have an old Keith Steele boat that I am looking to restore or have restored. I live in Boise and am curious if anyone knows of someone nearby who could take a look at this boat and point me in the right direction. Thanks, Brian

Rogue River October 09

I just got back from my first Rogue Wild and Scenic trip! What a blast! We had three very seasoned Rogue rafters (Scott, Marv and Dave), Greg Hatten, and Randy and Sandy Dersham rowing the wood. Randy took "Tubby" the pram, which looked like it handled the white water very well (I'm sure he can share more details). The river was running around 1200cfs during our trip.

After Randy and Sandy took the left route on Slim Pickens, there was a lot of talk amongst our group on the better… Continue

The Ten Most Important Questions That YOU Must Answer Before Starting Your Wooden Boat Building Project

Well! Wooden Boat Building has gotten us all fired up.

You've just been to the boat show and seen the price of some of the more affordable glass-fibre or aluminium boats and you just happened to know that you can build a wooden boat for far less than those things cost.

You've been down to the port or harbour and seen the wonderful timber boats being used by all sorts of people; maybe you've even seen a report on the TV about a Family Boat Building day held in some… Continue

Drift Boat Special

So far so good! A close friend of the family asked if I was interested in having a Drift Boat built for trout fishing and I said sure....what is it? Well, we are almost 3 weeks into the boat making process and for Larry's first time ever to build a Drift Boat, I would say he is doing a spectacular job!

Exterior walls are going up this week, fiberglass possibly next week. I'm really excited… Continue

Glue Question

I'm just starting to build a 17' driftboat kit. Does anyone have experience with using a polyurethane glue like "Gorilla Glue" instead of epoxy? The advantage being that it doesn't have to be mixed in batches.
Thanks.

My Baby is ready for the Water!
