Hey fellas,
Well I am finally done with the bottom of the boat! I am happy with the results and ready to turn the boat over...
I installed the the false stem and chine caps. The chine caps proved to be a bit of a challenge as I am working alone... but after some negotiating they went on without too much trouble...
After the chine was on - I filled the gap between the chine and the rounded fiberglass bottom with EZ Fillet (that stuff is pretty easy to work with - and takes…

Rick,
I think this will help you on the repair you are working on. When ply wood that is in place needs to be scarfed it can be done with a lap scarf. Not as neat and clean as a tapered scarf but it works. Basically you need to cut the mating surfaces in half to fit into each other. This can be done with a hand held router and a chisel. Set your router at 1/8" when working on a 1/4"panel and cut a checker board pattern. Use a chisel to clean it up.…

Those folks who attended last year's McKenzie River Wooden Boat Festival might remember an old green boat that was missing a transom that sat atop an old open wheeled trailer. LeRoy Pruitt recognized the boat as having belonged to his friend Edsel Chase. The boat was built in 1953.
On Thursday March 19th 2009 Ed's boat splashed into the Snake River. Floating the river in a wooden boat doesn't usually happen at this time of year in Jackson Hole but the day was right and Ed's boat was…

Hey everyone - hope you all had a nice weekend.
I managed to get some time in on the boat... and get the fiberglass laminated to the bottom. (24 oz woven roving)
Having never really worked with fiberglass I was a bit apprehensive, but I have to say it turned out pretty good, and was not too bad to work with. It was cool to wet out the cloth and watch it go from thick white cloth to almost clear. Good thing about the bottom on these boats is they are flat, I could image laying cloth…

Can you cram 100 hours of boat building into two twelve hour days?
Sandy and I found out the answer was no. But it was a lot of fun and a great attraction. We had done quite a bit of prep on the frames, side panels, and seats then staged everything the night before the show opened and glued the front stem and one side of the transom the night before the show so it would have overnight to dry. The next day we wanted to get the bottom on the boat but we talked…

Hello everyone, I just joined wooden boat people and wanted to say hi. I am not actually a wooden boat person yet, but hope to start the actual build in about two months. I wanted to tell Jason how much his pictures and comments have helped me feel more confident about doing this. The plans I have are pretty vague and seeing basically a day to day build is pretty damn helpful. Jason, please keep it up.
Thanks, Mark G

Well I made time to get the bottom on the boat this past weekend... and now it is really starting to look like a boat!
I basically dry fit all the screws and did any last minute sanding to make a tight fit all around. Spent the afternoon making a mess with the 5200 and before you know it, it was glued and screwed on.
Last night I planed the overlap from the bottom to match the sides and used the belt sander to make it a smooth joint.
I snapped some images during…

Howdy randy,I'm unsure if my boat will make it to the show this year but I'll for sure be there with 5 or so others from jackson. Our restore project is very close to completion and that will be coming with us.It looks awesome! As far as my story goes I arrived in Jackson 5 years ago and really wanted some sort of craft to enjoy this area with. After enjoying a float through Grand Teton Nat'l. Park with a good friend John Fournelle ( who'd built a Ray kit boat with his dad )I was hooked on the…

I had no idea what I was in for. I have refinished dining and coffee tables, worked construction part time to pay for college, and even spent a solid month refinishing the wood floors in my house. I thought the seemingly simple leak around the chine would take mabe a weekend or so to repair. Seriously. I thought it would be simple. Laugh all you want. I deserve it.
Now to the task at hand. I removed the interior, the UHMW bottom, and sanded the bottom and sides. What I found during all of…

I have been building the Devlin Egret for about 3 years now part time in my garage. I have all the contruction photos posted at this link http://ronnieo72.multiply.com/photos I haven't the patience to upload them all to more than one site.
I have the outside of the hull complete except for the bow eye and pintel/gudgeons. Currently finishing out the inside fairing, building the airtight compartments fore and aft, seats etc. then will move on to fitting out metal parts. Also still…

Happy Monday morning everyone...
Wish I had longer weekends to work on the boat, but she is coming along at a steady pace.
Not a ton to report in terms of progress - although I did get the chines in the boat this weekend.
That particular job took me a good amount of time.
But after some choice words, some splinters, and maybe too much coffee... they are in.
Here are a few pics of the process. Forgot to take a pic of the completed install - but you guys know what it…

Well guys, it is Sunday, and I was able to log some hours on the boat build this weekend.
Attached the stem, transom, and installed all the frames.
Needless to say, it is cool to see the boat take shape.
Can't wait to get the chine log in and get the bottom on.
Here are a few pics of the progress.
Thanks for looking!…

I am still working to learn the rivers on the south coast and have drifted the Elk four times in the last week and a half until it became too low to enjoy. This last Saturday my two kids joined me in my first run on the South Fork of the Coquille just south east of Myrtle Point, OR. It seems the river gets early steelhead and is fairly easy to navigate. Well, mostly true until about two miles into the drift, due to low water conditions, the channel narrows substantially and is mostly covered by…

Well it's time for another progress report.
Here are some images of the boat progress from the past couple days.
Started building the ever-important rowers seat... dry fit everything and drilled the holes for the rope pipes. Made sure everything was looking square. I will probably return to this later and glue it up - then get is rough sanded.
Then I moved my operation to the garage. Which I managed to keep comfortably warm all day : )
I was preoccupied with…

I'm just curious what it means to "make so and so a friend" in wordpress.
For Facebook (which I don't belong to) I think it means "friends can see my
profile information, but the public cannot."
But in wordpress it seems like I can see the profile info for all members
anyway. So what does "friends" mean.......just tryna figger it all out.

For the last year there has been a tree, with root wad, hung up at the top of Marten Rapids on the McKenzie. Marten was passable for good oarsmen, but tough in low water. It is gone. I'll float this weekend or next week from my place to the dam to report if it is a hazard. My guess is it is hung above High Banks.

Sorry for the long delay getting this out, but here goes. This boat was salvaged by Mark Angel with assistance from myself and two others. I regularly assist Mark on these salvages and learn a lot from him every time. We all are lucky to have Mark because no-one else out there that I am aware of is able, knowledgeable, and willing to recover these boats and bodies in the whitewater environment. As for this particular salvage, the only driftboat we were called out for on the Deschutes in 2008,…
